Hauptsache Waschbär e.V.
The volunteer members of Hauptsache Waschbär e.V. fight and work with a lot of strength and commitment for the well-being of raccoons:
- They advise and clarify all questions relating to raccoons in urban areas.
- They do committed educational work at schools and daycare centers.
- They are setting up an emergency aid station in Berlin where orphaned young animals are taken in and cared for.
- Raccoons in need and sick receive veterinary care.
- They see the killing of healthy animals as an intolerable violation of animal protection law.
- They are working to remove raccoons from the list of invasive species and thus ensure the long-term protection of these animals.
Since studies show that hunting is not an effective method for population reduction, Hauptsache Waschbär e.V. designed a pilot project as an alternative to the annual mass killing of orphaned young animals: In Berlin, a large number of raccoons are captured and surgically rendered sterile using minimally invasive procedures. If carried out successfully, a 50-70% reduction in young animals is expected in the second year. The project started in autumn 2022 and is scheduled to last four years. If successful, it can be transferred to other federal states and other EU countries.
